1. What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files sent from a website to the terminal (usually the browser) of the user, where they are stored and then transmitted to the website upon the next visit by the same user. Cookies cannot retrieve any other data from your hard drive, nor pass on computer viruses or capture e-mail addresses. Each cookie is unique to the user’s web browser.
2. Types of cookies
Cookies of all types may be either first- or third-party cookies, whereby “first-party” cookies are those that relate to the website’s domain, while “third-party” cookies are those that relate to external domains. Third-party cookies are necessarily installed by a third party, always referred to as a “third party”, and are not managed by the site. The main types are listed below:
2.1 Flash cookie
One type of cookie is the so-called “flash cookie” (Local Shared Objects) used internally by Adobe Flash Player to deliver certain content, such as video clips or animations, in order to remember your settings and preferences. Flash cookies are stored on your device but are managed by means of a different interface from that provided by your browser. The prior consent of users is not required for these cookies (for more information see “Managing cookies” below).
2.2 Technical cookies
Technical cookies are used for the sole purposes of “carrying out the transmission of a communication on an electronic communications network, or insofar as this is strictly necessary to the provider of an information society service that has been explicitly requested by the contracting party or user to provide the said service.“ (see article 122 (1) of Legislative Decree no. 196/2003). They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or operator of the website. They may be divided into:
2.2.1 Browsing or session cookies
Browsing or session cookies, which guarantee normal browsing and use of the website (for example to permit purchases to be made or to allow access to restricted areas) and which are in fact necessary for the proper functioning of the site;
2.2.2 Analytics cookies
Analytics cookies, which are similar to technical cookies in that they are used directly by the site operator to gather information in aggregate form on the number of users and how they come to visit the site in order to improve site performance;
2.2.3 Function cookies
Function cookies, which allow users to browse according to selected criteria (e.g. language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service received: the prior consent of users is not required for the installation of these cookies.
2.3 Profiling cookies
Profiling cookies are intended to create user profiles and are used in order to send advertising messages in accordance with the preferences expressed by users when browsing. User consent is required for the use of profiling cookies.

4. Duration of cookies
The duration of cookies is determined by their expiry date (or a specific action such as closing the browser), which is set when they are installed. Cookies may be:
4.1 temporary or session cookies
that are used to store temporary information and allow you to link actions performed during a particular session: they are removed from your computer when you close your browser;
4.2 permanent or persistent cookies
that are used to store information, such as your name and password, in order to avoid users having to enter this again whenever they visit a particular site: they are stored on your computer after you close your browser.
