We have to visit one of Italy’s neighboring countries to discover the origins of this delightful surprise: The School Cone is a tradition, which developed more than a century ago, at the start of the 19th century, in Germany, when children received a ‘Schultüte’ on their first day back to school.
Legend has it that the tree planted in the school courtyard bore special and delicious fruits in the shape of a cone. Students could only pluck the fruits from the branches as soon as they ripened which, incidentally, coincided with the start of the school term. That’s when every child could get a School Cone taking care not to break it.
These trees are the stuff of legend and don’t exist anymore but, luckily enough, the ‘Schultüte’ tradition lives on and is a favorite in German-speaking countries.
