Climate Action, Circularity and Environmental Stewardship

Preserving our planet

At Loacker, we implement regenerative and innovative practices to lead environmental stewardship by example. By applying scientific Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), we systematically decarbonise our operations, optimize packaging design to promote resource circularity, and eliminate unnecessary materials.

100% green electricity

We purchase 100% green electricity certified by Origin Certificates from renewable water and wind sources. To produce our own clean power, we operate photovoltaic solar installations at our Unterinn and Heinfels facilities.

Loacker - Green transport

Sustainable logistics and transport

Freight transport represents a key part of our carbon footprint. We take targeted action across two key priorities:

  1. Alternative fuels & freight optimization. Our two primary container transport suppliers now exclusively use 100% Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). By shifting approximately 20% of our export volume from the Calcio warehouse directly to the Venice port, we cut unnecessary road travel. In addition, packaging optimisations for key products increased load efficiency by 10%, saving around 20 freight containers per year.
  2. Energy self-sufficient hubs & fleet electrification. We are completing energy conversion feasibility studies for our Calcio and Chiusa logistics hubs to achieve greater energy independence. We are also evaluating a second electric truck for transport between Italian production sites and warehouses, working toward our 2026 target of covering at least 45% of transport journeys with vehicles powered by alternative, non-conventional diesel fuels.

Our new electric oven

Backing ovens are the heart of our wafer production—and historically our primary source of direct operational emissions.

In collaboration with our long-standing technology partner Bühler, we designed and built an innovative electric induction oven.

Following successful testing in Austria, the oven was installed at our Heinfels site in April 2025, baking its first wafers in July 2025. Powered by 100% renewable electricity, this project replaces fossil gas technologies and initiates a 4-to-5-year fine-tuning phase. It serves as a fundamental step toward decarbonising our wafer baking process while preserving Loacker's signature crispness and quality.

Packaging: our responsible choices

We reduce packaging impact without ever compromising food safety, legal compliance, or product crispness. Guided by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) science, we focus on four concrete pillars:

1. Recyclable mono-materials. Our packaging is designed to be fully recyclable where suitable local collection and recycling facilities are in place.

2. Material elimination and weight reduction. In 2025, we achieved a 7% weight reduction in paper-based packaging compared to 2024. For our Patisserie 100g line, eliminating the outer cardboard sleeve reduced packaging weight by 68%. Redesigning Quadratini packaging achieved a 17% weight reduction, saving 1 tonne of plastic per year.

3. 100% FSC® certified paper. Since 2023, 100% of paper and corrugated cardboard directly purchased for our production facilities is FSC® certified, guaranteeing responsible forest management.

4. Infrastructure mapping. To ensure our packaging is genuinely recyclable in practice, we are mapping recovery and recycling infrastructure across key markets accounting for at least 25% of our global sales volume.

Scaling regenerative agriculture

Agricultural raw materials represent the largest share of our environmental footprint. We partner directly with local farming communities to restore soil health, enhance biodiversity, and safeguard livelihoods:

  • Sustainable wheat protocol. Our 2026 goal is to source 30% of our total wheat volume from farmers adhering to Loacker's agronomic protocol, which requires allocating at least 5% of arable land to dedicated biodiversity areas.
  • 100% traceable Italian hazelnuts. Having completed 100% GPS mapping and digital batch tracking from farm to factory in 2025, in 2026 we joined an EU-recognised Producer Organisation (PO). On our own estates, we practice subsurface drip irrigation (saving up to 30% water), foliar fertilisation, nitrogen-fixing cover cropping, and on-field prunings mulching.
